my dad can't exercise because of his disk but needs to so that he can get the disk treatment and help diabetes. what alternative method is there?

There are other: Ways. He has to be on a proper diet, and can use stationary bike for little impact and can also use form of hand/arm ergometer. Ask around, especially the exercise places for these things. Good luck.

Another option is the non/weight bearing exercises such as water sports/swimming. Good luck
