Good idea: Urinary tract infections can be very serious if left untreated as the ability of bacteria travelling up into the ureters and into the kidneys can occur. As the kidneys are unique in that urine travels very close to the blood stream, it sometimes does not take much time or effort for infection to travel into the blood. Infections that travel into the blood stream are very serious.

Yes: you need a urine culture before starting meds.if you do not have discomfort that is severe of fever and can see your doctor the next day you could wait a day or so.
