See the AAE website: According to the American Association of Endodontists, root canal is still highly regarded as safe and a preferred method of saving teeth and bone from rapid erosion. Their website is rich with resources that explain the procedure and dispels many of the myths found in the lay press.

Root canals: How would one get rid of an infection within the interior of the tooth without a root canal? I am a physician - not a dentist. But I have had root canals due to tooth trauma and would have one in the future if it was medically indicated. I would prefer to get a root canal when feasible rather than losing the tooth altogether.
