Hiatal hernia: Hiatal hernia does cause reflux and GERD symptoms. You can have esophagitis or ulcer from hiatal hernia. Prevacid (lansoprazole) is effective. Follow up regularly with your doctors. Long term prevacid (lansoprazole) needs monitoring. Diet is important and weight loss is important if you are overweight.

Probably not: Hiatal hernia and acid reflux very common. Unless symptoms are severe or hiatal hernia very large, treatment is conservative.

No: Acid reflux, or GERD is common. Some people have hiatal hernia which contributes to this, others do not. Most of the time people with this experience heartburn. The Prevacid (lansoprazole) reduces stomach acid and should help. Also, avoid spicy and fatty foods, avoid carbonated beverages, don't eat a heavy meal before bed, try to lose if pain increases or problems swallowing, see your doc again. Good luck!
