Causes of sciatica: There are causes for sciatica besides disc problems. Hypertrophied muscle or spasm can push on the sciatic nerve causing pain to radiate down leg. The muscle can be in the lower back or pelvis. Since it appears that there is no serious structural problem, then physical therapy is the best way to get muscles and ligaments to relax and stretch and reduce pressure on sciatic nerve.
