Otitis: You are describing symptoms of otitis externa, which is an ear canal irritation. I recommend an exam. You may require a canal cleanser and canal antibiotic.

Ear itching: Some HAs can completely occlude the canal which if left in place for long will cause imposture to build up in the canal. Along with wax, closed, warm and moist condition can lead to otitis externa (bacterial or fungal). Definitely don't use Q-tips or anything to scratch inside the canal. Need to keep ears dry by taking out HA occasionally and may be avoid CIC type HA for now. May need Rx drops.
