Too vague...: I'm sorry, but without the specific diagnosis that was given to you it is impossible to be able to determine the type or severity of your problem. I would recommend that you ask the ordering physician to help you understand better what they found. Good luck.

Painful, not serious: First possibility: the joint referred to is an intervertebral disc. This is not as likely as this would usually require only one injection. The second possibility is the zygapophysial (or "facet") joints. If the L4-L5 & L5-S1 facet joints appear arthritic on imaging, both levels may be injected, sometimes bilaterally, accounting for four injections. The underlying problem? Arthritis.
