Hopefully not: Without symptoms that indicate the need for this sort of testing, it would be a waste of resources to perform it. If you have concerns that this is needed testing, then please discuss with your doctor and she can order appropriate testing to evaluate your concerns. Best wishes.

Likely not: Although the healthcare system is different in Canada than in the United States, it would be unlikely for a laboratory to perform tests not ordered by a physician. This practice prevents unnecessary or redundant tests and reduces patient anxiety and costs. Besides, who would interpret the results?

Not likely: Fungemia is not very common except in cases of immunocompromise states. Even in cases of systemic fungal infections, such as histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, coccidiomycosis, or mucormycosis, fungal culture and sensitivity, KOH prep are not indicated. Tests are indicated only based on index of clinical suspicion and correlation to guide diagnosis and treatment of a disease state.
