Ask doctor: Since she is pregnant and is diagnosed with hypothyroidism, she must be followed by an obstetrician and her family doctor on endocrinologist. Isn't she on thyroid medication? You should get her doctors to give you a clear treatment plan for her during the pregnancy and after also. We can't give you general advice that may go against her doctor's approach.

Hypothy in pregnancy: Hi. Hypothyroidism is pregnancy is no problem, as long as it's treated! Your question is a little confusing, and almost sounds like she is not being treated. Please define "natural" treatment. Levothyroxine is atom-for-atom identical to normal human l-thyroxine - that's pretty darn "natural in my opinion! She should be treated with levothyroxine to a TSH generally in the 1-2 range. Good luck!

Treatment now: My colleagues may have been too gentle with their advice. If your wife does not follow the hormone replacement that her physician prescribes, Baby can end up with permanent brain damage. If someone seeks a "natural treatment" for thyroid disease, this mistake can cost them their life. It's very serious but thankfully quite easy to manage -- no longer the mass-killer as in old times.
