Endocrinology needed: There is no reason why you can not eat with a blood glucose of 170; however, your blood sugar should not be at 170 mg/dL before a meal. You mentioned "honeymoon phase" but I'm not sure what that means. Talk to an Endocrinologist to check on progress and start a good insulin regimen. Do not delay too long, as uncontrolled type 1 diabetes causes all sorts of problems including infection, DKA, death.

You need insulin: Un honeymoon phase your glucose levels should be normal! 170 is too high. You need insulin to preserve you beta cell function. I treat the honeymooners with low dose insulin or pumps Studies suggest less long term complications and lower risk of severe hypos with intensive early treatment of type 1 diabetes!
