I have a sharp pain in my upper back when i breathe and cough. what could this be? i am a smoker as well

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Chest pain: You report a focal area of sharp pain with rib movement. Most likely this can be focal inflammation of the pleura (lining of the lungs) or inflammation of the joint between rib cartilage and bone (costochondritis).Pleuritis is not tender when you press on it, costochondritis is. There may or may not be an infection as source of the inflammation. Stop smoking. Taking Ibuprofen can help. See PCP.
