Could be: just trapezius muscle spasm due to overstretching during sleep, could be stretching of nerves in brachial plexus that lead to this, could be a disk herniation in the neck that is now compressing nerves and is apparent for the first time. 12 hours is a long time for numbness in the fingers. See your doctor.

Sleep smechanics...: Sleeping on your side without any cushion between your neck and shoulder can lead to nerve impingement, which caused the numbness you have. Also, the neck muscles that connect to your shoulder are overly stressed when sleeping in that position, leading to trouble using the arm the next day. This will get better with time and a lot of local heat/massage/OTC agents (i.e ICY HOT) to help muscle pain.
