Postnasal drip: You are most likely having postnasal drip. The back of your nasal cavity, mouth and throat are connected. While you are lying horizontally sleeping, the mucous drips down the back of your mouth into your throat and collects there. After you wake up and are upright, the mucous sitting on the back of your throat is irritating causing you to cough it up.
