An xray: of the xyphoid process usually doesn't yield much information unless there is a displaced fracture. An MRI may show a contusion if there is one, but it may not change the clinical management.

Yes: Yes, technically you can get an X-ray of the zip good process, or a cat scan which gives further information. However, they do not always show the cause of a patient's pain; some of that often comes from the physical exam itself.
