A member asked:

Is haloperidol associated with an increased risk of death if it is used to treat delirium in an elderly patient?

Possibly: Haldol (haloperidol) is used as an adjunct medicine for DT's, NOT as a primary measure. Aggressive benzodiazepam, anti hypertensive medications and nutrient support are the usual measures. Failing to recognize and intervene upon DT's is what is most deadly

Good question: Delirium itself is linked to increased mortality risk independentally of co-morbid illnesses. Prolonged delirium is not a good indicator. Early treatment of delirium does appear to protect one against some of the morbidity risks such as worsened cognitive decline, loss of independence, etc. FDA BB warnings for use in dementia may not have sufficiently controlled for delirium prior to their warning
