Can the use of haloperidol (for delirium) or hydromorphone (for pain) mask an elderly pt's ability to respond to antibiotic treatment for suspected sepsis and probable pneumonia?
I understand renal impairment can cause a build up of haloperidol & hydromorphone in the body. Is this risk reduced by the use of high dose diuretics?
I'm told haloperidol is an effective treatment for delirium, but sometimes makes BP too low. Is there some other medication, whether used iv, s/c or im, that doesn't have this disadvantage?
I hope that this question is not too simplistic to be answered. If an 88 year old, very unwell pt is administered 2 mg of haloperidol for delirium over a 14 hour period then how long would it take for the medication to completely "leave the system"?
Is haloperidol associated with an increased risk of death if it is used to treat delirium in an elderly patient?
