Ptsd: 1st step is to see a psychiatrist & have him evaluated. assuming he has ptsd then there are many treatment options. best treatment will likely be a combo of medication and psychotherapy. there are medications for mood (SSRIs) and nightmares (prazosin) but you want to stay away from the benzodiazepines. lots of therapy options out there from CBT to EMDR. check out http://www.ptsd.va.gov

Psychotherapy: Encourage your father to seek psychotherapy for his PTSD. Also encourage him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see if medications are warranted to control symptoms of PTSD. Also try to remember you are his child and not his therapist. He has to want to get better, and you cannot do this for him.

Good info: Start by learning about PTSD at the National Center for PTSD web page http://www.ptsd.va.gov/ If your Dad is a veteran, some good books are out there. "Thanks for your service" by David Finkel is excellent. With good treatment, your Dad has the potential for progress. Let him know you're interested and encourage him to seek expert help. It makes a difference that you care!

PTSD: If someone says you just have to learn to live with PTSD it's time to get a new therapist. Expert trauma treatment such as EMDR can help the person resolve the symptoms. I have many times heard "I have my husband back" "I have my daddy back" but it requires the individual want treatment and change. Treatment that does not result in measureable positive change makes the person think they are broken
