Are unrelated flashbacks normal with ptsd?

It's possible: It's possible that someone with ptsd has suffered several different traumas in life, so when one memory of a traumatic event is activated, other memories of other events can get activated. Ptsd can be very painful and disruptive to one's life. If flashbacks, jumpiness, an inner sense of detachment, avoidance or relationship issues are problems, please seek a mental health evaluation.

Can happen: I concur with dr. Weiner. It is not uncommon for recent trauma to inflame past niduses of pain. As reliving unfolds, it may be difficult to predict which past traumatic evenst it will draw from.

Symptom inquiry: The doctor should inquire if the patient has been in a situation where the patient believes loss of life or catastrophic injury was imminent, and with no means of escape. Symptoms include flashbacks, hypervigilance, sleep loss, nightmares, reliving the trauma, social withdrawal, anhedonia, temper outbursts, emotional withdrawal, feelings of unfinished business, and adrenalin seeking.
