A member asked:

Is gallbladder removal more high risk if liver disease/ cirrhosis is present?

Liver disease: or cirrhosis counts as a "medical morbidity" and therefore in someways makes surgeries more complicated. The concern here would be bleeding and increased risk of infection, since the liver is involved in blood clotting factor production and immune defense. That said, gallbladder removal is a relatively simple procedure - so hope u can discuss with your surgeon about your case. Good luck.

Cirrhosis: Patients who are cirrhotic are at increased risk of numerous things because liver function is impaired. Whether the risk of cholecystectomy is substantially increased depends upon the type of surgery, duration of anesthesia, skill of the surgeon, and so on. The better question is whether the benefit of the procedure outweighs the added risk. Good luck.
