Autoimmune causes: Many types of hypothyroidism are autoimmune in origin, meaning the body mistakes thyroid gland cells for something foreign and destroys it. Sometimes this autoimmune response is t felt to be triggered by allergies - whether to a food such as wheat, or environmental allergies. Other times, the response is felt to follow certain viral illnesses, much as Type 1 diabetes does. So MAYBE wheat involved.
