Needs evaluation: While the obsession in diabetes is blood sugar, one of the complications is changes in the blood vessels in the back of the eye which can cause visual changes and in more severe cases permanent loss and even blindness. There are effective treatments for this and if you have this happening, the earlier detected and treated, the better.

See ophthalmologist!: Hi. Advances in ophthalmology have almost eliminated blindness due to diabetes. However, I would say prevention always trumps treatment. Tight diabetes and blood pressure control will PREVENT retinopathy. Once retinopathy is diagnosed, regular follow up with an ophthalmologist is advised. Even if retinopathy has been diagnosed, tight control has been shown to reverse or stabilize retinopathy.
