Carotid body: Yes, that's a structure of the human body that serves as a sensor that makes sure the brain gets blood (and therefore oxygen). That beating you feel is the 'pulse' - and I assume you have a thin neck, which is why you can feel it so well. I don't think you need to go to the ER for that -- it would be a waste of your time. If you're still unsure, a regular appointment with a family doctor is OK.
