Carotid bruit: Maybe an early sign of plaque build up in your artery. Ultrasound should clear the suspicion up for you.

Neck bruit: Your doc most likely heard a bruit with the stethescope. A bruit is a sound related to turbulent flow. The next step in your workup is to review your vascular risk factors and get an ultrasound or duplex of your neck arteries. The issue is stroke risk.
