Why would a compression fracture at t12 show up on some xrays and not others. ex: seen in jan, not in aug, then seen a year after that?

Angle of view: Depends on the bones/tissues in the way, severity of the break (/compression) and the angle of the x-ray beam. If only mildly compressed and a large person, could not be visualized.
