Several weeks: Pericarditis is inflammation of the thin sac around the heart. Usually diagnosed by typical symptoms, typical EKG changes, and absence of other potential causes of chest pain. There are many possible causes of pericarditis. Sometimes no cause is found, and in these cases it should resolve within a few weeks. If it hasn't significantly improved within a month, then further evaluation is warranted.
