Several options: This type of pain could be caused by a strained/sprained muscle in mid back, inflammation of the lining around the lung - called Pleurisy, muscle spasm, or possible infection in the lung.

Musculoskeletal pain: Usually this pain comes from the muscles and ligaments of the chest wall. If the pain is sharp and worsened by coughing, laughing or deep breaths, it could represent pleurisy which always requires an evaluation for the cause.
