Inspiratory pain: Sharp,shooting chest or rib cage pain often is caused by a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between two ribs. The pain is worsened by a deep breath or a cough. Other causes are rib injury or growths, pleurisy, pneumonia or other lung pathology.If symptoms persist have an examination by a physician and appropriate studies like a chest X-Ray or ct scan will be ordered.
