Not common: A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or the fascia of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it from within. There are different kinds of hernias, each requiring a specific management or treatment. But hernia under the rib is not common.

Yes, but rarely: A very uncommon hernia, called a Grynfeltt hernia, can occur under the 12th rib, through the muscles of the back. Trauma to the chest wall can potentially result in hernia. A penetrating injury to the diaphragm (between chest & abdomen) can cause an internal hernia of intestinal contents, which can be very serious.
