A Laser: Smart liposuction involves a laser which heats the skin from below to stimulate the skin to contract. Traditional liposuction is performed before or after the laser is utilized. Liposuction done without a laser also stimulates the skin to contract, though possibly to a lesser degree. A skilled plastic surgeon who does liposuction well can produce reasonable skin contraction without a laser.

Brand name: Liposuction is the umbrella term referring to removing fat from the body by suction. Smart lipo is simply the brand name of one manufacturer's device which uses laser energy to help break up the fat prior to removing it by suction. There are multiple others as well, including pro-lipo, cool lipo ..Etc. There are also other energies like us called vaser, or vibration called vibrasat or hi def.

Lipo vs smart lipo: Smart lipo uses a laser to melt fat. Less can be performed at one time, and it is both more time consuming and expensive than traditional lipo. A good liposuction surgeon can obtain excellent results with no laser. Dont buy the hype about the skin tightening. It tightens exceedingly well with regular lipo if the proper technique is used.

Marketing!: If you look at the studies, the effects of standard lipo and laser-assisted liposuction (aka smartlipo) are pretty much identical. The laser manufacturers would like you to believe that smartlipo is better...So they can sell more machines!

See below: Traditional liposuction is generally done under general anesthesia, has a longer recovery period and more bruising and pain. Smart lipo is usually done awake under tumescent anesthesia. Smart lipo uses a laser to destroy the fat cells and coagulate the blood vessels leading to less bruising and pain and faster recovery.

Laser lipo: Smartlipo is a brand name for a laser that melts fat. With regular liposuction no laser is used, and the fat is removed using small, hollow tubes, called canulas, and suction. Smartlipo involves the melting of fat by the laser, followed by the suction of the melted fat.
