Possible: Omeprazole and other PPIs may cause malabsorption of nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12 if taking chronically. Studies also showed that PPIs may increase risk of osteoporosis, pneumonia, and C diff diarrhea. PPIs are effective for treating reflux and heartburn but avoid taking it regularly if you don't need to.

Not necessarily: Omeprazole can help gastroesophageal reflux quite a bit, and also prevent stomach bleeding, as well as cancerous changes in the esophagus from gastroesophageal reflux. However, chronic use can be associated with lower vitamin b-12 and iron absorption. It is important to have your blood count and vitamin B-12 level checked once a year while taking this regularly.
