Back/side pain: Interesting. The fact that is worse with rest/sleep in better with exercise suggests it is a muscular issue. Some muscle injuries issues tighten with rest and improve with activity due to increased blood flow to muscle. Best to see good physiatrist or sports med doc to evaluate.

Exercise helps: Back pain can be caused by poor posture, wrong mechanics when lifting and sometimes by a bed or chair that somehow fails to support the contours of the back. Strengthening the back and abdominal muscles help. Word of caution, as with all exercises, stretch before and after exercises, go slow and build up as you go.
