Lifestyle and meds: Depends on how high your BP is. Start with: dash lifestyle, lose weight, walk 40 mins every day. Limit alcohol and dietary salt/sodium. If not controlled (<140/90) you likely need medicine. Which meds to start and how much depend on other factors like your past history and other illnesses, your age, and race.

Lifestyle changes: Try lifestyle changes first: - don't smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product. - lose weight if you're overweight. - exercise regularly. - eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat. - limit your sodium, alcohol and caffeine intake. - try relaxation techniques or biofeedback.

Lifestyle, then meds: Therapeutic lifestyle changes like weight loss, exercise, sodium restriction (see dash diet) are first, but looking for adverse effects of medications, kidney or hormonal issues, or blood vessel blockages to the kidneys may be culprits as well. If the blood pressure is still elevated and confirmed by home or ambulatory monitoring, then medications (often several in lower doses) may be indicated.

Depends --: Most hypertension that i see in my practice is what's called essential or primary hypertension -- and one needs medications to control this condition -- but there are secondary hypertension such as secondary to stress or diet or obesity etc.

Many ways: Dash diet, regular exercise, weight loss, stopping smoking, and stress reduction can all be helpful to reduce blood pressure. Medication can be used in addition to above, if severe or not well controlled. Good luck.
