A member asked:

What to do if i have caregiver burnout but am afraid to let outsiders help? (mom was abused in past by psychiatric personnel, which has me terrified.)

Take care of you!: You NEED to take care of yourself if you are going to be able to care for your mom! Are there any friends, relatives that you trust that would be able to give you a break for a few hours a week? If not, have you considered a home health aid (they can come in but you don't have to leave until you know and trust them). Do what gives you joy - take a bath, read a book, meditate, call a friend...

Respite care: You don't need psychiatric personnel, you just need reliable respite care people. Ask your doctor for names of people, or through your church. Find a nearby convent that may have retired nuns who would work with you to care for the person you need some time from. You have to keep your mental health healthy in order to care, and you don't want to end up being like those psych personnel.
