Talk to the dentist: Dentists are receptive to patient wishes. He/she will discuss their recommendations about the need for numbness in your case. With modern techniques, many procedures can be done without shots. On the other hand, if you actually need to be numb to make a procedure bearable, it may be foolish to try it without anesthetic. With numbing gel for the gum and other techniques, shots can be tolerated well

Shot: Unless you need a specific procedure, why would you need a shot? On the other hand if you need one we are pretty good at giving them, probably better than physicians( as they delegate )
