How does an iscreen fecal occult blood test detect colon cancer?

No: A fecal occult test tests for blood in the stool. Colon cancer can be a cause but so can colon polyps, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcer and many other causes. Anyone with a positive fobt test should have further work up done to evaluate where the blood is coming from.

Tumors bleed: It is possible to detect blood in the stool using a fecal occult blood test (fobt). Bleeding can be caused by many conditions (i.e. Polyps, cancer, hemorrhoids, gastritis, ulcers, etc.) if blood is detected on fobt, this must be worked up to determine the cause. A colonoscopy may be recommended.
