Voiding trials: It sounds like your father has acute urinary retention. The most likely cause is an enlarged prostate. There are other causes as well and his inability to urinate is likely multifactorial. To maximize the chance of my patients passing a voiding trial, I like to treat active urinary tract infections, ensure Alpha blockers (like flomax) have been restarted and keep them well hydrated.
