Should prophylactic treatment begin 24 hrs. after an accidental needle stick?

Immediately: If a situation arises in which accidental needle stick occurs, the more rapidly the institution of prophylaxis, the better. Would not wait for testing of the person from whom the needle came because if they prove negative, prophylaxis can be discontinued.
