A member asked:

Could any expert explain to me how gerd - is or causes cancer? thanks!

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Chronic Inflammation: GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease leads to alkaline reflux that changes the barrier lining of the esophagus (the tube just before your stomach). Inflammation leads to changes called "Barrett's esophagus" - with time, this is thought to predispose risk of esophageal cancer by creating altered, abnormal, premalignant cells.
