Ask you OB: A sonolucency means an area of fluid under the placenta. It is probably just a blood vessel, but it could also represent an area of bleeding. You need to ask your OB.

Not over cervix: The placenta can be anywhere inside the uterus. The location is not particularly important as long as it is not covering the cervix. This is called a placenta previa. If a previa is present then the baby will need to be delivered by c section.

Yes: If the placenta is covering the opening of the cervix (the os) the yes a C-section will be needed. Most doctors say as long as the edge of the placenta is at least 2 CM away from the os the vaginal delivery is safe.

What do the doctors do with the placenta after birth?

Depends!: In any high risk or complicated deliveries, we send the placenta to pathology to look for any reason for the complications. In normal deliveries, the placenta is bundled together with other placentas and cremated. If you want to keep the placenta, you can ask your doctor. It does have to be handled in a special manner though. So let us know before your delivery.

What is a low-lying placenta?

Plac covers cervix: The placenta can be located anywhere inside the uterus. If the placenta covers the opening of the cervix then it is called a placenta previa. In some cases it is not covering the opening but is close. This is referred to as a low lying placenta. This is common early in pregnancy and is monitored by ultrasound. If the placenta is covering the cervix then a C-section is needed for delivery.
