A member asked:

How many days would it usually take for rales to disappear in pneumonia if fever has subsided 24 hours after start of azithromycin?

Rales: This is a physical manifestation of inflammation within the lung tissues, causing either fluid to accumulate in the microscopic air spaces (alveolae) or for there to be stickiness so the walls of the alveolae pop as they are forced open. These changes may persist for some time (variable & dependent upon the organisms and the host) after the bacteria have been eliminated by antibiotics and WBCs.

Pneumonia symptoms: It can take up to a week sometimes for those "noises" to disappear after starting appropriate treatment. You are now killing the bacteria causing the infection and noise, but now your body has to get rid of all that "garbage" down in the lungs. Do deep breathing and cough exercises to help loosen the material and open lung sacs and by all means avoid ANY respiratory irritants such as smoke, dust,
