Time and rest: Severe ankle sprains sometimes require a period of immobilization at times up to 6-8 weeks. If you are still having significant pain with walking, I would recommend immobilizing the ankle in an ankle brace or fracture boot for 2-4 weeks, possibly 6 weeks depending on how quickly your pain is improving, then aggressive therapy afterwards to strengthen the ankle and regain balance.

See a doctor: This is easily treated by a physician that has been trained in the foot and ankle. This would include podiatrists and foot and ankle orthopedists. Ask for the recommendations of family, friends and you PCP for a great place to get a referral. You can also check out: www.acfas.org, www.apma.org, and www.aaos.org for local providers.
