Not necessarily: Basically, you have an ankle sprain. The vast majority of people who have sprained their ankle do very well with nonoperative care. Sometimes with a "grade III" ankle sprain in which the ligaments are completely torn we will use a cast to treat initially for a short time. But no, surgery is usually not required.
