Before braces: Thinking about braces before treating your gum disease or cavities is a big mistake. Before you get braces, the orthodontist will have you see a dentist and make sure that your gums are healthy, there is no cavities and you know how to implement oral hygiene. The clearance in writing will be delivered to your orthodontist.

Yes: it is important to have a healthy mouth before you start Invisalign or braces. Swollen gums can cause complications that slow down treatment and possibly effect your outcome.

Yes: No Orthodontic Specialist will treat your malocclusion if your teeth, gums, and jaws are not healthy. To do so would be at best slower progress, at worst damage to your gums/bone. Please see your Dentist to make sure your teeth are healthy, a Periodontist to make sure your supporting Tissues are healthy, and then an Orthodontic Specialist to treat your malocclusion. Beware shortcuts.
