A member asked:

How accurate are blood tests in determining invasive candidiasis? would it be recommended to have more than one test to be sure?

Be careful: Real "invasive candidiasis" reflects the organism growing from multiple blood cultures, and some specialty labs offer assays for tissue wall fragments. These people are already obviously immunocompromised, though recognizing the candida infection may be tough. Independent medical thinkers diagnosis invasive candidiasis by unproven means in people who just have the blahs. I'd avoid these people.

Invasive Candidiasis: Without having further details, it would be hard to answer your question. Invasive candidiasis usually refers to Candida in the blood stream or involvement of internal organs. Culture of the blood or deep tissues or tissue for pathology are some ways to diagnose an invasive candidal infection. These types of infections usually occur in very sick patients with other medical problems.

It's legitimate!: ANY blood culture with Candida growing in it, should be considered real and needs to be treated, with the source of the infection removed (sources includes: central line, GI source, infected prosthetic device, presence of an abscess). Candidemia should not be interpreted as a contaminant. For additional guidance, an Infectious Disease Consult is recommended.
