Hormones: A lot of women have pregnancy related digestive issues! we believe it is because of high Progesterone levels, and this hormone can slow bowel motility. You can try increasing your water intake, fruits and vegetables, and you can safely take a stool softener like colace (docusate sodium).

Prego, constipated: yes. It's very common to be a bit constipated or irregular during pregnancy, for a number of reasons. Prenantal vitamins have extra iron in them, which is a likely cause of constipation. Decreased gut motility due to hormonal changes also contributes. Drinking lots of water, eating a diet hi in fiber, and exercising (as permitted) may help. Let your OB know if the problem persists.

Not to worry!: You DON'T have to have a bowel movement every day... to be healthy! I doubt this has anything to do with your pregnancy- unless you're anxious about it! Certain foods can be constipating, as can simple dehydration or the use of opiate pain medications. As your pregnancy progresses and the fetus puts more pressure on your bladder and bowels, it will definitely alter things. Talk to your OB about it
