It may very well be: Is this a new retainer? It may need a tiny adjustment. When the impression was taken, the soft tissues may have been compressed a bit, resulting in a too tight fit. Call your orthodontist for a follow up.

Sore spot: It is common to get sore spots with your orthodontic removable retainer. As the retainer “settle” sometimes it will put uneven pressures on the gums and create sore spot. The orthodontist can quickly adjust the retainer and make your retainer comfortable again. When coming in for an adjustment appointment, be sure to wear your retainer during the 3 hours prior to the appointment.

Don't wait: There is no reason for you to be in pain. Relief is probably only a simple adjustment away. Call your Orthodontist for an immediate retainer adjustment appointment so you can go from "ow" to "ah."
