Adjustment: The practitioner who made the appliance for you should be contacted for a reexamination. Your retainer may need an adjustment. Swollen gums may also be due to many other reasons, including gum disease, diabetes, thrush, candida, etc. Call your Dentist or Orthodontist now, then clean the retainer by putting it into denture cleaner (follow package instructions).

See your orthodontis: Occasionally, trauma to the gum tissue occurs due to excess pressure from the orthodontic retainer. Rinse your mouth with a warm salt water 3 times per day. Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAID for pain control. Contact your orthodontist if you see any signs of infection or you feel as though the area is not healing properly after 4-7 days.
