Topical anesthetic: It is, in fact, an orange chemical dye (phenazopyridine) that is excreted in the urine, and acts as a topical anesthetic upon the urothelium.

Not a side effect: Phenazopyridine is a urinary tract analgesic. Exactly how Phenazopyridine works is not known. It is thought to work by relieving pain on the lining of the urinary tract. Phenazopyridine may change the color of your urine to orange or red. It may also stain fabric. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
