Inotropic state: The inotropic state of the heart, or squeezing function may be worked up by (1) echocardiography or ultrasound of the heart, (2) stress echocardiography, which measures the inotropic state of the heart with exercise, (3 radionuclide angiography which measures the inotropic state, or (4) cardiac catheterization, which measures the hemodynamic state, which equates to the inotropic state.
