Relative: It is relative, but dentist see many palates from flat to high vaulted and get to know when they see one in the extreme end of normal. If your upper back teeth fit inside or ended to end with your lower molars you probably have a narrow arch. In orthodontics sometimes both arches are widen to make more room to fit all the teeth.
